What is Project Cornerstone’s ABC Program?

Project Cornerstone's Asset Building Champion (ABC) program wants every student to grow up feeling valued, respected, and known.

Each month, parent volunteers read a book in class. The book teaches life skills, mindfulness, and empathy. This gives students an opportunity to talk about their feelings, experiences, and concerns. The program aims to build developmental assets – positive relationships, values, and skills – that provide a foundation for a healthy future for our students.

Want to get involved?

Becoming an ABC reader involves a 1-2 hour commitment per month:

  • 30-45 minutes of training about the book, discussion points and activities
  • 30-45 minutes in the classroom reading the book and talking with the children

Here is a rough timeline of what to expect:

  • September: Volunteer recruitment and program setup; self-serve orientation materials will be distributed for returning volunteers that are eager to start
  • First week of October: In-person volunteer kick-off, including presentation of orientation materials and preview of first lesson
  • October: First volunteer-led lessons in classrooms, with monthly lessons through end of year
